Maya Eventov Originals

 Photo

Maya Eventov was born in 1964 in Leningrad, in the former Soviet Union. At a very young age she was introduced by her parents to the great artistic treasures of St. Petersburg. Maya spent countless hours at her favourite Hermitage museum studying the works of great masters, especially those of the post-impressionist period and Russian avant-gardism. The palette of such artists as Matisse, Gauguin and Renoir greatly influenced her interpretation of color. She derived her sense of balance and composition from the works of Alexander Rodchenko, El Lissitzki and Kazimir Malevich and learned the value of detail and light from the works of old masters. She began her artistic studies at the age of six and after graduating from a four year art program was accepted to the prestigious High School #190 affiliated with the St. Petersburg State Academy of Industrial and Applied Art.

Maya graduated from the Academy in 1987 with a Master's Degree in graphic design and began work illustrating children's books. She immigrated to Canada in 1990 and resides here with her husband and two children. Her style of work has changed over the past 10 years, much of which she attributes to the happy, safe and secure life she found in North America.

Eventov's paintings are characterized by a thick application of acrylic paint using a selection of different sized palette knives. The paint is applied as both blended and pure colors. Smaller knives are used to create depth and detail in her paintings. She then uses a series of varnishes designed to create a "wet paint effect."

Maya has exhibited in many of the finest galleries in North America and her paintings can be found in private collections such as that of the Right Honorable Jean Chrétien and in corporate collections such as the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in Toronto.
