THE LIGHT: The Art of Josef Kote is a publication that represents the first attempt to dive into the painter’s art practice. It circumscribes as far as possible his prolific work and delves deep into his style and communicative intentions. There is an extensive work of content selection and filing behind this publication, in which the artist has directly invested his efforts. The result of this careful skimming is an oeuvre of nearly 250 paintings and drawings, significant in terms of technique and exemplifying different creative periods of the artist. The selection has considered works spanning a specific time frame: from 2009 onward, covering fourteen years of work and it examines Kote’s artistic evolution through six chapters, each devoted to a recurring thematic core. The book does not pretend to pigeonhole the artist’s practice into rigid categories. It intends to provide useful reading tools to approach the works of these fourteen years of creation, placing them in a broader artistic context.
This publication tries to describe the artist’s works in detail, showing their technical proficiency and original expression but also wants to observe them from the viewer’s perspective. Kote moves multiple strings: he is a proficient builder who will appeal to those who love technical compositions. He is an emotional storyteller, affecting those who appreciate art through the filter of the experience of feelings. He knows how to combine high references, evoking different styles of art history and teasing the minds of those who like to classify and find accurate references. The art practice of Josef Kote is a combination of languages: it starts from an unclear emotion, from an image that remains in the poetic memory, and tries to eviscerate it, combining instinct, mind, and gestures. It is a language that expresses itself by touches of colors: an intuition running through the palms of the hands.
