Lori Schinelli Glass Sculptures
Softly patterned seashells and pieces of beach glass have always followed Lori Schinelli home from the shore. Displaying these treasures in her studio workspace helps her to balance the noise and stress of modern existence.
For Schinelli, recollecting time at the beach and its beauty gives perspective to the hard lines, sharp angles, and digital chaos of the contemporary world. To create her fluid, colorful glass sculptures, pieces of colored glass are melted together, placed on elevated surfaces within the kiln while heat and gravity allow the glass to flow and distort creating organic color patterns.
When cool, these patterns are assembled on another kiln shelf and fused to create the final composition.
With the composition completed, each piece is given a unique shape. Heating in the kiln once more relaxes the glass over its hand-built mold. The last step in the process is to sandblast the piece, revealing the caves and caverns within.
Schinelli's work does not attempt to recreate any specific sea treasures; but rather to capture their essence. A reminder of the fragile and precious oceans.
"I invite you to let your eyes wander along the flowing lines of color. Explore a cavern. Swirl in a spiral of converging patterns. Escape the everyday world, for just a moment, engage your imagination and experience peace."
